about

This is an album made up from music that I collected over the years whilst travelling in diverse locations, and naturally .. lots of listening and record collecting. I was also heavily involved in the early 90s, in the 'so called' early world music scene.

At the same time I was playing the ney in a classical Arabic ensemble, clarinet with a Turkish singer, a clarinetist in a well known Klezmer group and recording duduk for chocolate commercials (it's true). Although I enjoyed playing all these different types of music, I knew deep down that I could never really be a real 'neyist', or be on the same level as a clarinettist such as the great Husnu Senlendirici and the likes. So, to at least play some of this music I ended forming 'Al Orkesta' with the aim of playing some of the various pieces in a 'sort of jazzy way'. I'm not sure if it worked, but that's for the listener to decide.

Lastly, some of these pieces are rearrangements of well known traditional pieces from a wide range of cultures. The other pieces are original compositions, which although not always 'in character' with traditional music styles, sort of seemed to be fun to play live, and give the group a wider range of sounds.

Joe Higham Brussel, Belgium

Just another musician who's trying to make a living playing music. I play sax and clarinet whilst making noise (whenever possible) using a Deluge, a few modular bits and pieces, or on my laptop via Supercollider.
